What you'll need

• A 100 ft tape measure (or a laser measure)
• A helper, if you have one
• Your phone for photos
• Optional: a 4 ft level or a long straight board

02 · DIMENSIONS

Measure the usable surface

Measure the full length and width of the hard surface where the court will go. Measure both long sides and both short sides, because slabs are rarely perfect rectangles. Write down all four numbers.

Note anything in the way: drains, posts, a basketball hoop base, steps, or a garage door edge. Measure its distance from two edges.

03 · SURFACE

Check the surface

Modular tile goes over a solid, flat surface: concrete, asphalt, or an equivalent hard base. It isn't designed to go directly on grass, gravel or dirt. Tell us what you have, including any cracks, heaves or low spots.

A slight slope for drainage is normal. If you have a level, lay it on a straight board at a few spots and note anything that looks off.

• The whole area from each corner (4 photos)
• Close-ups of any cracks, drains or obstacles
• Where a delivery truck would park (for freight)
